FAQ:
Why don’t your links open in a new window? I like that better.
For a number of reasons actually. First of all, the XHTMLv1.1 strict DTD does not support the _target=”" attribute. In english, that means that in order to comply with the standards, you can’t use the HTML that makes links open in a new window. Yet another way to say it would be that it has been declared officially deprecated.
On a more personal note, I think opening things in a new window breaks the logic of internet browsing. Specifically, it breaks the ability to use the “back” button. If you must have links open in something new, I would suggest downloading the Firefox web browser. If you click on a link with the middle mouse button, Firefox will open that link in a new tab for you. Not only that but it’s much more secure than Internet Explorer.
Why do I have to register on your blog just to post comments?
Well, to prevent spam. If comments are only open to registered users, it will prevent people from “spamming” the comments on every post. Personally, I would rather see fewer comments or none at all than 150 comments for some online casino and the methodology I use to accomplish that is only allowing registered users to post comments.
note – I have since implemented comment filtering using Akismet so registration is no longer required.
Why doesn’t your page have any colors or graphics or anything? (Why is your page so plain?)
The short answer – because I don’t like junk getting in the way of information.
The long answer – because graphics, AJAX, javascript, etc. all require bandwidth. My upstream connection (downstream to you) is capped at 384kbps. That means that no matter what kind of technical tricks I implement, you cannot download anything from me faster than that speed. Accordingly, by personal philosophy and practicality, I limit all non-essential “fluff” on my site. This allows for more people to view the site at the same time without it slowing down to unreasonable levels. I measure the results of my efforts at websiteoptimization.com by putting in my URL and examing the results.
I will add more to this as more questions arise.
